Problem Statement
The graduation rate in the country has increased. Annually half a million Nepalese graduates from the country. However, talking about our space in the global market it is somewhat negligible. Still, we can see a large number of youths frustrated with almost no opportunities for their career stability. The scenario created the mindset of youths migrating to the USA, Canada, Australia and European countries at first for higher studies and later settling due to non-lucrative career opportunities in Nepal. One who can not afford to have good education from the country works in India and Middle east mostly as labor worker. Now we normalized it and built up the culture of youth graduating in Nepal ultimately to fit in the countries like USA, Canada, Australia and European countries or Middle East and India.
There is a huge gap between the knowledge delivered by the academic to the students and the expectation of the industry from the students. Due to students’ inability to meet the industrial requirement, a lot of students are either left unemployed or are underpaid. This is creating a situation called skilled- unemployment in the country.
The good number of youth graduates from ICT are interested to engage in the research work but unfortunately, there is somewhat no opportunities in this area. An outcome in the research area is long-term process and organization with small-scale and employee with short-sightedness find no reason to invest in the “research and development”.
During undergraduate/graduate studies one has the opportunity to learn about a diverse subject area of the technology. Students draw their interest in the specific subject matter and invest most of the time learning about those subjects but post their academic life they find no opportunity in the area of their interest. Nepal job market is being limited hardware and networking, programming, telecommunication- installation and monitoring.
Upon the interaction with several employers and government agencies, we found there is an immense potential of the industry to accommodate the technical human resources produced by the Nepalese universities/colleges. The big challenge they find to accommodate them is the lack of problem-solving attitude and ownership to their work. In the meantime, an employee feels the lack of growth opportunities provided by the industry because employee being short-sighted.
The only way to minimize the gap between academic and the industry is through training or through research and development works. Bits ladder is working towards joining hands with international educational and research institutions along with educational institution and industries in Nepal so that students in Nepal can work on the latest research projects along with international researcher. We are in the initial phase and hopefully will be able to join hands with organizations in the near future and create a platform for Nepalese students where they can work together with scientists and researcher across the globe.
The only way to minimize the gap between academic and the industry is by empowering youth through training or through research and development works.
Bits ladder is working towards joining hands with local/global organizations so that human resource in Nepal can be as competent as their global peer.
