Introduction

Engineering education in Nepal dates back to 1970 with the establishment of Institute Of Engineering. Previously, Tribhuvan University was the sole provider of engineering education but today there are four universities in Nepal providing IT education namely Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Purbanchal University and Kathmandu University. There are many colleges affiliated to these universities that have curriculum in IT education. These institutions are providing education from Intermediate Level to the Master’s Level.

Neighboring countries like India and China are spending millions of dollars on research activities and have taken a considerable leap in the field of science and technology in par with those in Europe and the US. However, in Nepal we are still dependent upon curriculum based approach instead of application based research. Every country has its own specific need. Although technology is global, application of technology might differ from country to country depending upon their need. Today, Nepalese engineers are working in world class companies and research organizations globally but we are not able to transform our knowledge into our problem areas for e.g. in agriculture, telecommunication, biomedical engineering etc. The work undertaken by engineers should have a significant impact on people’s lives be it shaping up a technology, designing a product etc. A good engineer should be up to date with the latest technology and trends even to work locally.

Although our curriculum covers most of the technical subjects it is not designed to meet the industrial requirement. As mentioned before we are still dependent upon curriculum based approach instead of application based research. There is a wide gap between the knowledge delivered by the academic to the students and the expectation of the industry from the students. Due to students’ inability to meet the industrial requirement, a lot of students are either left unemployed or are underpaid. This is creating a situation called skilled- unemployment in the country.

Job Market Requirement

As a Computer engineer, IT engineer or Electronics & Communications engineer there is a wide variety of area that students can venture into. Fields like image processing, hardware /embedded programming, networking, apps development, software development etc are some of the examples. These topics are not only relevant locally but globally as well. Depending upon which area a student wishes to pursue, he must be familiar with the skills required into becoming a professional. Some of the skills necessary to excel in today’s job market is as follows:

Methodology

To minimize the gap between academy and industry we need our students to be as competent as required in the job market locally and globally. As the technological advancement is rapid and the job market requirement is varying, we need our students to be updated and have the potential to adapt as per technological advancements. The aim of Bits Ladder is to educate the current students about the scenario and to support them regularly to cultivate for the future market. The above figure explains the gap and the means to bridge it.
